Jack Cole, US Army Center for Intrusion Monitoring and Protection, was presented the IEEE Computer Society Hans Karlsson Award at a ceremony on May 16, 2007 in Los Angeles "for recognition of outstanding skills and dedication to diplomacy, team facilitation and joint achievement, in the development or promotion of standards in the computer industry where individual aspirations, corporate competition, and organizational rivalry could otherwise be counter to the benefit of society".

The specific citation Mr. Cole received for this award is: "For bringing together diverse interests with inspired leadership, dedication and vision in producing five storage system standards, and forming the first information assurance standards committee."

He is the 2006 recipient and the 8th such person in 14 years since the award's inception in 1992, along with others such as Vic Hayes, the “father of Wi-Fi”.
