Notes Used by John Cole in Accepting the 2006 IEEE Computer Society Hans Karlsson Award at an awards ceremony in May 2007 in Los Angeles

This is a great honor, and I am very grateful to the Computer Society and to the nominator, Merritt Jones, and the endorsers.

This Award is About Good Leadership And Standards

But it Violates the “Good Leader” Standard by Lao Tzu

A leader is best when people barely know that he exists

Less good when they obey and acclaim him

Worse when they fear and despise him

Fail to honor people, and they fail to honor you

But of a good leader, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say, "We did this ourselves."

Reality: It Takes a Community to Create Standards

These People Truly “Did It Themselves”

I am honored and greatly appreciate the Award, but I am only one of many people working to develop standards.
